13th November - 19th December 2002 We have seen and done such a lot over the past month that it has been hard to condense, so this update is split into subjects over a number of pages - get comfortable! Diving After the success of our meeting with Dr. Belal, we were more than a little disappointed to come up against a further obstacle in the form of the Marine Park manager who first insisted that Dr. Belal had given us permission to dive but not to conduct surveys and then issued us with a letter allowing us to survey a few of the sites that we had identified but requesting that we show him all of the results - for censoring perhaps? - before sending them to the Reef Check Foundation. In addition we had to run any articles written about the surveys past him before publication and each of the dives had to be planned through the marine park - as far as we were concerned this could only cause further problems and delays. We felt that the best way forward would be to hand the work over to local divers; perhaps the progress we have made, along with the Dr. Belal's support, will make life a little easier for the next person. We must say a huge thank you to Rakad for all his help throughout our time in Jordan. Local regulations state that you have to dive with a local diving centre and Rakad enlisted the help of Mansour Al Shamaileh of Jordan Frogman who acted as our dive guide and enabled Max and Vicky to continue with their training; I am happy to say that Max has returned to the UK as a PADI Advanced Diver and Vicky as a PADI Rescue Diver.
