Getting there: The only border crossing between Jordan and Syria is at Der'a. The main border crossing between Turkey and Syria is at Bab al-Hawa. There is a weekly ferry service between Lattakia and Alexandria (Egypt) via Beruit (Lebanon). We took approximately an hour to clear the Syrian side of the border, and were charged the following:
If you take a Diesel vehicle into Syria you will be charged $100 "Diesel Tax" UPDATE 16-10-02 - A very easy border crossing, taking approximately one hour. We were charged $30 for insurance and $7 for customs. We had arranged multiple entry visas in advance at the Syrian Embassy in London, at a cost of £60 per person. Exiting Syria was just as simple - we crossed at Der'a, the whole process taking about half an hour, including a cup of coffee with the border guard who was completing our carnet! Visa requirements: British Nationals require a Visa to enter Syria. It is said to be possible to obtain a visa at the border, however we have heard from other travellers that this can be extremely difficult. Visas are available from Syrian consulates outside the country, although at the time we were travelling it was virtually impossible to get one in Jordan. We obtained our visas in Cairo, although this was a difficult task as the Syrian consulate had just reintroduced the need for a letter from the British Embassy in Cairo before they would process an application for a visa. Unfortunately at the time we were there (February 2000) the British Embassy would not issue letters! It took a great deal of persuasion before our visas were issued and we were only allowed single entry visa, costing £34.00 per person. To avoid any hassle it is worthwhile obtaining Syrian visas in the UK - these are valid for presentation for three months and allow a stay of fifteen days. You should be aware that if your passport shows any evidence of a visit to Israel you will be refused entry into Syria Carnet de Passage en Douane: Required for entry into Syria Miscellaneous: For further information contact: The Embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic, 0207 245 9012 Damascus: British Embassy Address: Kotob Building Telephone: (963) (11) 373 9241/2/3/7 |
