Getting there: We entered Romania at the border near the Bulgarian town of Ruse - as with Bulgaria, it is illegal to drive a dirty car in Romania. We were charged the following: 'Eco' tax - £5.00 Update 07-09-02:We entered Romania near the Hungarian town of Gyula. No cost to enter Romania, and just a brief customs check and a look at the ICMV. LPG appears to be widely available - we filled at a service station in Deva - N45 52.492, E022 54.995 . Leaving Romania - we were charged $10 Eco Tax and $7 for the toll for the bridge into Bulgaria. The border guards were extremely friendly and helpful and friendly and we took a total of 20 minutes to exit Romania, including a brief customs check. Visa requirements: British nationals are allowed a visit of up to 30 days without a visa. Carnet de Passage en Douane: Not required Miscellaneous: Deutchmarks can be used instead of the Romanian Leu. Customs searches can be extremely thorough - particularly if you have travelled through African or Middle Eastern countries. We were subjected to a 3 hour search with everything taken out of the vehicle and off the roof rack and all the inside door panels removed. The fact that it was one o'clock in the morning and we had been driving for 14 hours did not help matters!
