BULGARIA

Getting there:

We entered Bulgaria at the border crossing near the Turkish town of Edirne. Before entering the border area we gave Florence a good wash - it is actually an offence to drive a dirty car in Bulgaria and the police will issue on the spot fines. Unfortunately, at the border, you have to drive through a 'car dip' full of disinfectant - a syrupy liquid that acts like a dirt magnet and undoes all your hard work!!

We incurred the following costs:

  • Disinfection tax - £1.00
  • Road tax on entry - £1.50
  • Road tax on exit - £5.00

Update 07-09-02
Our Green Card did not cover us for Bulgaria and we purchased 3rd party insurance - $13 for one day. We were charged $7 road tax and $4 disinfection tax (including a lovely drive through the sheep dip!). Entry took about 15 minutes.

No charge to exit and the process took around 10 minutes.
